A retreat that beckons solitude and stillness

 About

SABI is a haven for the senses, a space to breathe with permission to rest.

Hidden from the world, SABI is a lovingly handcrafted stone and timber cabin balancing luxury with authenticity.

Earthy tones, natural materials and raw textures ground you. Sublime in its simplicity SABI is a home of serenity and stillness that invites quietude and introspection.

A place to rest the mind and restore the soul.

Drawing on the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, you’ll find humble materials that embrace imperfections and the patina of time. A cohesive colour palette evokes a soothing experience with walnut coloured timber reminiscent of a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The considered design is a demonstration in restraint offering a sophisticated space out of the ordinary.

The house is somewhat of a juxtaposition. It is romantic but not feminine; masculine yet nurturing. It is voluminous in space and intimate in feel. Raw, earthy and sensual it is refined in its luxury.

Raw, earthy and sensual.

A place of awakening and awareness.

To experience SABI is to be enveloped by calm. We wanted to create an escape from life's ever-increasing demands. We hope you feel both transported away, and perfectly at home.

In short, we hope you never want to leave.

SABI, our soul home

As a young family with two toddlers under two, we made the fortuitous move to Tasmania from the mainland in late 2019. Within months of arriving, we discovered Binalong Bay and were enamored by the breathtaking deserted coves and beaches. The connection we felt was instant and still moves us. We embarked on a two year project, designed and painstakingly restored the tired cabin on weekends.

Now that we have finished the restoration, we spend our weekends at the beach, exploring the surrounding nature reserves, climbing the endless boulders, and when in season, foraging for wild berries. Our intention was to create a refuge of calm, a place of quietude away from the chaos and demands of life. We have found a sincerity and soulfulness within these walls and we can’t wait to welcome others to share it with them.
